The United States officially confirmed the transfer to Ukraine of 120 mm depleted uranium armour-piercing shells for US M1 Abrams tanks

A few days ago, it was reported that the USA would supply Ukraine with depleted uranium shells. This has now been confirmed officially.

Here's What We Know

The US Department of Defence has announced another $175m military aid package for Ukraine. In addition to tank shells (quantity not specified) with depleted uranium cores for M1 Abrams, it includes:

  • equipment for air defence systems;
  • missiles for HIMARS;
  • artillery shells (105mm and 155mm);
  • 81mm mortar systems and shells;
  • TOW missiles;
  • Javelin missiles;
  • over 3 million rounds of ammunition;
  • tactical air navigation systems;
  • communications systems;
  • obstacle clearing munitions;
  • spare parts.

The depleted uranium core increases the armour-piercing effect of the ammunition. The density of depleted uranium is 19,050 kg/m3. This almost corresponds to the density of tungsten, because of the shortage of which in the XX century the production of projectiles containing uranium began.
