Leopard 2A8 tanks for Germany and Norway will be equipped with Trophy, most successful active defence system
The European holding KNDS, which includes the German company Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW) and the French NEXTER Defence Systems, has selected an active protection system for Leopard 2A8 tanks.
Here's What We Know
More specifically, the holding company has decided on the active protection system for the tanks that will enter service with the German and Norwegian defence forces. The choice was made in favour of an Israeli development called Trophy. It will now be used in the standard modification of the tank.
The KNDS decision has made Trophy the most successful active defence system. In addition to Leopard 2 tanks, it is integrated on the M1 Abrams and Merkava IV, and is also used in armoured personnel carriers, wheeled and tracked infantry fighting vehicles.
In winter 2023, Norway ordered 54 Leopard 2A8 main battle tanks worth approximately $2bn, all of which will be equipped with the Trophy active protection system. Germany has signed a framework agreement to supply up to 123 Leopard 2A8 tanks. The cost could exceed $3bn.
