Switzerland will sell 25 German Leopard 2 tanks to Germany on condition that it does not supply them to the Armed Forces of Ukraine
Germany will be able to buy more than two dozen Leopard 2 main battle tanks. However, the seller agreed to approve the deal on an important condition.
Here's What We Know
Back in the winter, the German government wanted to buy back some of the decommissioned Leopard 2 tanks from Switzerland. More than six months later, parliament approved the deal. The company Rheinmetall will be able to buy 25 tanks on condition that they do not supply them to Ukraine.
In early summer, the decommissioning of the combat vehicles was approved by the lower house of parliament. A few months later, the upper house decided to decommission the Leopard 2 if the tanks are sold to the German company Rheinmetall. 25 members voted in favour.
It is now up to the Federal Council to make a final decision and determine the timing of the deliveries. The Swiss government has received an agreement from Germany that the Leopard 2 tanks purchased will not leave the European Union or NATO.
