Europeans believe society is not ready for artificial intelligence - survey

Morning Consult Pro surveyed 1,000 adults in the UK, Germany, Spain, Italy and France to gauge European consumer attitudes towards artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

The study found that AI-assisted internet search is among the top three most interesting applications in all countries except Spain, where it ranks fourth. Respondents are also interested in integrating the technology into medical diagnostics, roadside assistance, flight and hotel recommendations.

However, the vast majority of European consumers surveyed believe that society is not yet ready for AI. This sentiment is strongest in France and Germany, with 74 per cent and 70 per cent of respondents respectively.

Behind these doubts are concerns about the spread of misinformation, child protection and personal data privacy. For example, just three in ten respondents trust generative AI with their personal data.

In the UK and Spain, the top concern is the irresponsible development of AI by tech giants.

Concerns about AI are also closely linked to European consumers' call for regulation. More than half of respondents agree that AI should be regulated by the government.

Overall, the survey shows that consumers are interested in AI. However, concerns remain about the potential misuse of the technology and its lack of control.
