Twitter makes millions of dollars from 10 accounts that Elon Musk unblocked - Andrew Tate, Aаron Anglin and The Gateway Pundit are bringing the company money
The Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) has conducted a study that found that Twitter generates millions of dollars in revenue from just 10 accounts. The accounts in question were those that Elon Musk had granted amnesty to.
Here's What We Know
Researchers looked at 10 accounts that included Andrew Tate, anti-war activist Robert Malone, founder of the neo-Nazi organization Daily Stormer Andrew Anglin and the far-right platform The Gateway Pundit. They had all been banned permanently by the previous Twitter administration, but the new owner of the social network has lifted the ban.
CCDH experts analysed around 10,000 posts made over a 47-day period in December and January. The average total views of all tweets per day was 54 million. Extrapolating that by 365 days we get 20 billion views per year.
Next, the researchers created three accounts and subscribed to 10 accounts. Ads appeared every 6.7 publications on average. According to analytics agency Brandwatch. The cost per 1,000 views is $6.46. That means that with 20 billion views, Twitter generates more than $19 million in revenue.
The figures may not be accurate. But in any case, the study demonstrates how profitable it is for the social network to make money by having controversial characters whose posts have large reach.
The report's authors noted that ads were sometimes displayed alongside offensive publications. For example, they saw Amazon Prime Video ads following an Andrew Tate tweet that "women can only make a worthwhile career in prostitution." And the NFL ad was mirrored following a publication with misinformation about COVID-19.
