BAE Systems unveils Australia's first STRIX drone with 800km of range and a payload of 160kg

BAE Systems Australia has announced the STRIX unmanned aerial vehicle. It was unveiled at the Avalon Airshow 2023.

Here's What We Know

BAE claims the STRIX is the first fully Australian drone. It was designed, manufactured and armed by Canberra. It measures 2.6 metres high and 4.5 metres wide. The drone is built with a tandem aerodynamic design, where lift is provided by a pair of roughly identical wings arranged one behind the other.

STRIX is able to take off and land vertically, so long runways are not required for launch. It has a maximum range of 497 miles (800 km) and a payload weight of 160 kg.

BAE Systems Australia says it will develop a new low-cost, high-precision munition specifically for the drone. If all goes according to plan, the drone will be fielded in 2026.
