Apple CEO Tim Cook has insisted on releasing a mixed reality headset this year, although developers say it is not yet ready
According to a report by the Financial Times, Apple is set to introduce a mixed reality headset this year, against the wishes of the development team.
Here's What We Know
According to the publication, the launch of Apple's first headset has apparently caused some serious controversy at Apple. Designers and developers insist that the devices in this category are not yet ready for launch. They would like to delay the release until lightweight augmented reality glasses mature a few years later.
However, Apple's operations group wanted to release an early version of the product in the form of a virtual reality-oriented headset, similar to ski goggles, that allows users to watch 3D videos, perform interactive workouts or make FaceTime calls with virtual avatars.
CEO Tim Cook has rejected objections from Apple's designers and insisted on a more limited product launch this year. The headset is said to be something of Tim Cook's legacy - it is an innovative product for Apple, designed entirely under his direction.
Incidentally, Apple's mixed reality headset has been in active development for seven years. This is twice as long as the time it took to develop the original iPhone before its launch.
