Sales of new smartphones have dropped sharply in Russia - Xiaomi and realme displaces Samsung and Apple
The second quarter for the Russian smartphone market ended with the biggest drop in sales for the past 10 years.
What we know
MTS analysts say that smartphone sales fell 30% in volume and monetary terms from April to June 2022 compared to the same period in 2021. About 4.5 million devices worth ₽103 billion ($1.7 billion) were sold in three months, according to the cellular operator. This is the level of 2020, when the market sank sharply because of the pandemic COVID-19.
Other operators are less categorical in their estimates. For example, MegaFon reports a 17% drop in sales, and Tele2 records a 23% drop in sales and a 12% drop in revenue compared to the second quarter of 2021.
At the same time Russians began to give preference to Chinese smartphones. In particular, models of brands Xiaomi and realme took 66% of the market. This is due to the drop in the income level of Russians and the rise in the price of phones, despite the alleged strengthening of the ruble. Note that Xiaomi 12 Pro they now have almost $2000, while previously the price was more than $2300, while in Europe you can buy it almost twice cheaper.
