Su-34 supersonic fighter-bomber aircraft worth up to $50 million may have self-destructed in Crimea
After shooting down the Su-34 by the Ukrainian Armed Forces, another such fighter jet allegedly decided to self-destruct in Crimea.
Here's What We Know
The Russian online publication Baza reports that a Russian warplane crashed in Crimea on the morning of September 11 at approximately 00:00 (EDT) or 21:00 (PDT). The Su-34 is believed to have self-destructed. The pilots were able to eject, after which they were picked up by the military. The reasons for the crash were not reported.
A few hours later, another Telegram channel reported that a Russian air defense system shot down its own plane. Whether the two events are somehow connected is unknown.
Recall that the Su-34 is a new multipurpose fighter-bomber that entered service in 2014. It is designed to destroy enemy targets up to 600 km from the front line and can reach speeds of up to 2,200 km/h. The cost of the aircraft is $36-50 million.
In conclusion, we would like to add that Su-34 fighters are often unlucky. For example, in mid-summer, a plane was destroyed in the skies over the Luhansk region without Ukrainian involvement. It was shot down by the Russians themselves.
