Switzerland does not allow Germany to transfer ammunition for Gepard self-propelled air defense systems to Ukraine.
Here's What We Know
Bern cannot agree to deliver Swiss-made military material if the recipient country is involved in an international conflict. A letter to this effect was written by Guy Parmelin, the Swiss economy minister, to Christine Lambrecht, the German defense minister.
Germany first applied to Switzerland back in the summer for permission to give the Ukrainian Armed Forces 12,400 rounds of ammunition for anti-aircraft tanks equipped with 35mm cannons. Switzerland refused, citing its neutrality.
A few months later, Christine Lambrecht argued that the request for permission to supply ammunition was due to the need to protect critical infrastructure in Ukraine. Nevertheless, Switzerland did not change its position.
According to Der Spiegel, Lambrecht told Switzerland that the 30 Gepard anti-aircraft tanks transferred to Ukraine were in dire need of additional ammunition. Whether Germany will make a third attempt to obtain permission is not yet known.
