The Bundeswehr refuses to supply more weapons to Ukraine
The German Defense Ministry has refused to increase arms supplies to Ukraine.
What we know
Members of the ruling coalition in the Bundestag proposed that the ministry start supplying more weapons to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. But the initiative did not find a response. The Bundestag said it was not ready to take such a step due to threats from Russia.
The German Defense Ministry said that Germany should be prepared for the possibility that the Russian Federation could "take advantage of a gap" in the defense of NATO countries. Representatives of the Ministry point out that in this case Germany will be forced to provide support to its allies, which is required by Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
Social Democrat Kristian Klinck, Sara Nanni of Union 90/Greens and Free Democrat Alexander Müller criticized the position of the German Defense Ministry. They published an article to this effect in Der Spiegel. According to them, Ukraine is now defending Europe from Russian aggression, and the relatively modest supply of weapons because of the Bundeswehr's falling defense potential is a far-fetched conflict.
