Australia sends P-8A Poseidon patrol aircraft to the Mediterranean Sea to participate in Operation SEA GUARDIAN 2022

The Royal Australian Air Force has sent a Boeing P-8A Poseidon to Italy to take part in Operation SEA GUARDIAN 2022.

SEA GUARDIAN is the only NATO naval operation that takes place in the Mediterranean Sea. The purpose of the operation is to ensure security and to respond to threats that may arise at sea. It also aims to deter terrorism, maintain situational awareness and enhance defense capabilities in the region.

The P-8A Poseidon will be stationed in Italy. The aircraft will perform operations in the Western and Central Mediterranean. Boeing's giant will remain in Europe until the middle of this month. By sending the aircraft to the Mediterranean, Australia is trying to strengthen its partnership with NATO under its Memorandum of Understanding.

The Royal Australian Air Force has 12 planes in service, but the total number will increase to 14, according to the December 2020 contract. The P-8A Poseidon can be used for surveillance and strikes. The aircraft supports the AGM-84H/K SLAM-ER and AGM-84 Harpoon missiles. In addition, Australia wants to integrate a long-range anti-ship missile (AGM-184C LRASM).
