Raytheon upgrades Javelin and extends service life of anti-tank missile system by 30 years

The American defense company Raytheon intends to significantly extend the life of the Javelin anti-tank missile system.

The portable complex was created to destroy primarily armored vehicles, but it can be used to defeat drones, helicopters and aircraft coming in for a landing. Javelin is the first third generation anti-tank missile system. It was adopted for service in 1996.

Raytheon is already working on the F-Model. This is the newest version of the Javelin. It has a multi-purpose targeting head and is more effective in destroying enemy armored vehicles. The upgrade will allow operators to forget about the need to use different types of projectiles depending on the targets.

The upgrade will affect not only the missile, but also the launcher. Back at the end of the first half of 2022, Raytheon received a contract to produce the Lightweight Command Launch Unit (LWCLU). This is an upgraded launcher. It is smaller and lighter than the current model by 30% and 25% respectively. The LWCLU is equipped with new sensors, displays and imaging tools that allow the operator to use the Javelin in all weathers.

As we mentioned above, the Javelin entered service in 1996. The upgrade will extend the life of the anti-tank missile system into the early 50s of the 21st century.
