Portugal became the 29th operator of the most advanced AIM-9X Sidewinder level II guided missiles
Portugal became the second country to announce the purchase of AIM-9X Sidewinder Block II guided missiles in 2022.
Here's What We Know
Italy and the U.S. Navy announced in early 2022 that they had ordered a "modest number" of air-to-air guided missiles as part of the Lot 23 contract. The Italian Air Force will use Block II/II+ level AIM-9X missiles on fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighters.
Portugal recently joined the AIM-9X Operators Club, becoming its 29th member. It will purchase 18 Sidewinder Block II missiles under a Lot 23 contract for fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters. Raytheon could begin deliveries of the AIM-9X in 2026.
The AIM-9X Block II is the most advanced short-range air-to-air missile in service with the U.S. Army. It is equipped with a 128 x 128 sensor and has improved immunity to thermal traps. AIM-9X Block II has improved maneuverability due to thrust vector control.
