Turkey Develops OZGUR Active Phased Array Radar for F-16 Fighting Falcon Fighters

The Turkish Air Force plans to equip its fourth-generation F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters with domestically produced radars.

Here's What We Know

The defense company Aselsan has developed an active phased array radar. The device was created as part of the OZGUR program. The onboard radar will be installed on the F-16 Fighting Falcon. By using gallium nitride it performs better than most existing active phased array radars. The new Turkish radar station can simultaneously track sea, land and air targets.

Turkey is considering upgrading 35 F-16 Block 30 level aircraft. In total, the air fleet includes 43 such fighters. In addition to the new radar, they will receive upgraded avionics and other support systems.

Since Turkey has a source code only for Block 30 fighters, the F-16 Block 40 and Block 50 level models will not be upgraded. There are 117 and 110 of them, respectively. But Turkish authorities hope that the U.S. will help modernize the F-16 Block 40/50 fighters to Block 70 level.
