Australia wants to buy advanced radar-guided missiles from the US. The State Department has already approved the deal. It now awaits approval from the US Congress.

Here's What We Know

Australia intends to get Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles - Extended Range (AARGM-ER). The authorities have requested up to 63 Advanced Anti-Radiation Guided Missiles - Extended Range. The deal is valued at $506 million.

In addition to the missiles, Australia will also receive mockups and training missiles along with associated equipment. By purchasing the AARGM-ER, Australia hopes to improve its ability to counter current and future threats.

The air-to-ground radar missile was developed by Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman. It is equipped with a new warhead and can evade enemy air defences. AARGM-ER carriers include F/A-18 Super Hornet, F-35 Lightning II fighters and EA-18G Growler electronic warfare deck aircraft.
