BAE receives $491m from Lockheed Martin to produce electronic warfare systems for F-35 fighters

Lockheed Martin has signed a contract with BAE Systems to produce advanced Block 4-level electronic warfare systems for the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter aircraft. The deal amounted to $491 million.

Here's What We Know

BAE Systems has already delivered 1,200 electronic warfare systems for fifth-generation aircraft. The new contract is aimed at batch #17. Lockheed Martin announced on the last day of 2022 that batch #17 includes 126 F-35 Lighting II fighters.

The Block 4-level electronic warfare system will provide greater situational awareness, enhanced survivability and enhanced capability to counter advanced threats. It includes upgraded hardware and software to more accurately detect multiple covert threats simultaneously.

BAE Systems notes that the company's state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities enable it to produce sophisticated, intricate electronics on a large scale. This allows for affordable electronic warfare capabilities.

The upgraded AN/ASQ-239 has an all-round coverage. It is capable of providing real-time warning of missile attacks using radar, infrared or laser guidance. The AN/ASQ-239 is designed and manufactured at BAE Systems facilities in Manchester and Nashua.
