Austria will spend €1.6 billion to upgrade Eurofighter Typhoon Tranche 1 fighters
The Austrian Armed Forces will receive funds to upgrade its fleet of fourth-generation Eurofighter Typhoon fighters. The funding also includes the purchase of training planes.
Here's What We Know
The Austrian Air Force has 15 Eurofighter Typhoons in service. The first aircraft entered service in 2007. A total of €1.6 billion will be allocated to modernize the fleet and buy training planes.
The fighters will be able to launch Meteor or AIM-120 AMRAAM air-to-air missiles. The modernisation programme will also include improvements to the self-defence system and enhanced night-time combat capabilities. The latter objective will be achieved, in particular, through the use of night vision goggles or an outboard guidance module.
In addition to upgrading 15 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters, the Australian Air Force will buy 18 trainer aircraft to replace the Swedish SAAB 105E. Austria will choose between the Czech L-39NG and the Italian M-346.
