Britain tests first Type X robotic tank, Wiesel Wingman and ROBUST unmanned combat vehicles with guns, UAVs and Javelin missiles
The UK Ministry of Defence has conducted a series of tests on unmanned combat vehicles. The devices were developed by Elbit, Wiesel and Milrem.
Here's What We Know
The defence agency created the Future Capability Group (FCG), which conducted tests of unmanned vehicles. The tests assessed the vehicle's ability to navigate difficult terrain, its speed, and the performance of the communication system.
Three drones took part in the tests: ROBUST, Wiesel Wingman and Type X. They were developed by Israel's Elbit, Germany's Rheinmetall and Estonia's Milrem respectively.
The ROBUST unmanned combat vehicle is equipped with a 30-mm cannon and Iron Fist active protection. The arsenal includes a fire control system and situational awareness system. On board the ROBUST is a reconnaissance-level unmanned aerial vehicle.
The Wiesel Wingman is a relative new German development. It was unveiled by Rheinmetall at the AUSA 2019 arms show. The vehicle is equipped with a launcher for launching Javelin anti-tank missiles.
Finally, the Type X is a new robotic tank unveiled at IDEX-2023, which took place at the end of winter in the UAE. It is equipped with a Cockerill II combat module, two cannons, and can launch Hunter 2S drones.
The UK Army's official website says the tests were successful. The military note that the tests are still at an early stage, so it is too early to talk about integrating the robot into the armed forces.
