Spain sends NASAMS air defence missile systems to Estonia

Estonia plans to get its own air defence systems, but this will take at least two years. Other countries will be protecting the airspace in the meantime. In particular, Spain, which this week sent NASAMS air defence systems to Estonia.

Here's What We Know

Estonia wants to get NATO countries to deploy air defence systems on their territory on a rotational basis, as they do with fighter jets. On 14 February, Spain announced that it would send NASAMS to the Baltic nation.

On Wednesday, April 5, the surface-to-air missile systems arrived in Estonia and will be on combat duty by the end of the week. NASAMS will be protecting the Ämari military base, which is a strategic NATO facility, for the next four months.

Estonia and Latvia are holding a joint tender for new air defence systems. The countries have received five bids. The air defence systems are expected to enter service in 2025.
