Romania to spend €100 million to buy 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks

The Romanian Defence Ministry intends to arm itself with American M1A2 Abrams tanks. The ministry has sent a request to the country's parliament for approval of the deal.

Romania wants to buy 54 M1A2 Abrams tanks, 12 of which will be transferred directly from US stocks. The value of the contract is estimated at €100 million. It will be implemented through an intergovernmental deal without the need for a direct contract with General Dynamics Land Systems.

The contract, in addition to the combat vehicles, involves the purchase of simulators and ammunition. The deal will be part of the Romanian army's rearmament programme. The project runs until 2040, but the contract for the purchase of M1A2 Abrams tanks has not yet been specified.
