Poland may become the first foreign customer for AGM-158D JASSM-XR missiles with a range of 1,900 km for F-16 and F-35 fighters

The United States is working on the AGM-158D JASSM-XR air-to-ground missile. The first foreign customer could be Poland.

Here's What We Know

Lockheed Martin is expected to hand over the new missile to the US Department of Defense next year. Poland's plans to buy the JASSM-XR were announced by the country's defense minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, during a briefing with US Vice President Kamala Harris.

Unfortunately, we don't have much information about the promising missile yet. Lockheed Martin has been awarded a contract to develop a modification of the AGM-158 with an extreme range. The missile will have a weight of 2300 kg, taking into account the warhead (910 kg). The maximum launch range will be around 1900 km.

The original missile was called JASSM-XR, and later was designated AGM-158D. It will be equipped with a new control unit, modified wings and a secure GPS receiver. The cost of one missile will be approximately $1.5 million.

The US Department of Defense plans to make its first purchase of JASSM-XR in January 2024. The first shipment will include 40 missiles. The JASSM-XR will be carried by F-16 Fighting Falcon and F-35 Lightning II fighters.
