UK invests £656m in development of sixth-generation Tempest fighter
The UK continues to develop the Tempest sixth-generation fighter programme. The UK Ministry of Defence has allocated an additional £656m for the project.
Here's What We Know
The sixth-generation fighter is being developed as a replacement for the Eurofighter Typhoon and Mitsubishi F-2. The new aircraft is expected to be ready by 2035. At the same time, the US and China will have sixth-generation fighters.
The UK is working on the Tempest with Italy and Japan. By the end of spring 2025, the British government will have invested £2bn in the programme.
The entire lifecycle of the fifth-generation fighter will span several decades, creating thousands of jobs and economic value for the UK. The programme is expected to employ more than 20,000 people and generate more than £26bn for the UK economy by 2050.
