Spain is considering the acquisition of M142 HIMARS and PULS missile systems
The successful use of the M142 HIMARS by the Ukrainian Armed Forces has boosted demand for Lockheed Martin's missile systems. A queue has already been lined up for the HIMARS, and perhaps Spain will join other countries.
Here's What We Know
The Spanish government has launched the Sistema Lanzacohetes de Alta Movilidad (SILAM) programme to acquire the new missile system. HIMARS is not the only contender.
Lockheed Martin's M142 high-mobility artillery rocket system will compete with Israel's PULS multiple rocket launcher system from Elbit Systems. The latter has an advantage.
The good news for PULS is that last year the Spanish Ministry of Defence began discussions with Escribano and Expal to develop a Spanish multiple rocket launcher system. It should be based on the Israeli-made PULS.
The Spanish company wants to acquire technology from Elbit Systems and start producing rocket launchers and missiles on Spanish soil. An Iveco Astra with 6x6 wheel configuration will be chosen as the chassis.
Coming back to the SILAM programme, it should be noted that the authorities are not aiming for a quick implementation. At least when it comes to financing. The defence budget only provides €22 million for project development in the current year. The total funding will be €290 million from 2023 to 2028.
