UK and Germany to develop new ammunition with increased kinetic energy for Challenger 3 tanks
The United Kingdom and Germany have signed an agreement to begin a new phase of development of "more lethal" ammunition for improved main battle tanks. The UK intends to upgrade 148 Challenger 2 tanks to Challenger 3 level.
Here's What We Know
The UK and Germany will develop a new projectile with increased kinetic energy (EKE). Officials say the new munition will improve the army's ability to counter current and future threats.
The joint programme will begin in 2023. Not only will the upgraded Challenger 3 tanks be able to use the new munition, but also German Leopard 2 fighting vehicles, which are equipped with Rheinmetall's L55A1 cannon.
Germany and the UK are open to welcoming other interested parties to the project. They will also discuss possible cooperation for the development of other 120mm tank guns.
As for upgrading the Challenger 2 to the Challenger 3 standard, the UK Ministry of Defence has allocated £800m ($1.1bn) for this. The work will be carried out at a joint venture between Rheinmetall and BAE Systems called RBSL. Full operational readiness is planned for 2030.
