David's Sling missile defence system shoots down a missile for the first time in history while firing on Israel

The day before, Israel's Stunner air defence system, known as David's Sling, succeeded in shooting down an enemy missile for the first time in its history. It happened during an attack from the Gaza Strip.

Here's What We Know

On May 10, at least 500 rockets were fired at Israel. 60 of them were intercepted by the Iron Dome surface-to-air missile system. You can see how it worked in the video below. Some of the rockets did not reach Israel and landed in the Gaza Strip.

The Stunner was able to intercept one of the three rockets that were fired at Tel Aviv. The second landed in open territory, while the third "attacked" the sea.

David's Sling missile defence system is designed to intercept air threats up to 300km away. The US defence company Raytheon was involved in its development. The David's Sling is intended to fill the gap between the Iron Dome short-range system and the Arrow-3, which is designed to intercept ballistic missiles.

David's Sling could have had its baptism of fire five years earlier. In 2018, Israel wanted to test the air defence system against Syrian missiles, but they fell in Syrian territory.
