FLIR Defense delivers 1,000th Centaur ground robot to US defence forces
FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne, has announced that it has handed over the 1,000th robot to the US Defence Forces. The vehicle is called Centaur.
Here's What We Know
FLIR Defense says the milestone has been reached in the Man Transportable Robot System Increment II project, which aims to deliver medium-sized unmanned ground vehicles. Production of the robots is set up at the company's plant in Maryland.
The Centaur is used for mine and explosive ordnance disposal. It's also used for biological, nuclear and chemical threats. The vehicle can carry a variety of payloads, depending on the mission, including thermal imaging and night vision cameras.
FLIR Defense has been awarded $250 million to supply more than 1,800 Centaur robots. Customers are the Navy, the Air Force, the Marine Corps and the US Army. The latest contract was signed last year. The $62.1 million agreement involves the production and delivery of nearly 500 Centaur robots.
