Italy to procure SCALP Naval sea-launched cruise missiles with a range of up to 1,000km

The Italian Navy is set to purchase French SCALP Naval cruise missiles.

This was reported by the Italian publication RID, citing its sources. The decision to purchase the missiles is to be announced this year. The contract will be implemented by the French unit of MBDA. Italy plans to use the fleet of modernized U212NFS project submarines as launchers.

SCALP Naval is a sea-based cruise missile. It was built by MBDA in 2017. SCALP Naval was developed as part of the MdCN programme for the French Navy, as one of the modifications of the SCALP EG (Storm Shadow) aircraft cruise missile. SCALP Naval is capable of engaging targets up to 1,000 km away.
