There has been an increase in the number of US aircraft in the Middle East. The US has moved fifth-generation F-22 Raptor fighters into the region.

Here's What We Know

The US Air Force has redeployed aircraft from the 94th Fighter Squadron, which was based at Langley Base, Virginia, to the Middle East. The decision was a response to the unprofessional behaviour of the Russian fighters.

According to US generals, Russian planes and reconnaissance drones have regularly flown over US bases in Syria since late February. At times they have tried to provoke US pilots into aerial battles. In addition, some fighters were armed with air-to-ground missiles while flying over US targets.

Regularly violating agreed measures to resolve airspace conflicts increases the risk of escalation. This was stated by CENTCOM Commander General Erik Kurilla. He added that the operational deployment of fifth-generation F-22 Raptor fighters is a clear demonstration of the commitment of partners, allies and the United States to long-term peace and stability in the region.
