Germany and France want to create an ultra-modern European tank with drones and robotic systems to replace the Leopard 2 and Leclerc
Germany and France have returned to the issue of creating a joint main battle tank. The new combat vehicle should be a replacement for the Leopard 2 and Leclerc.
Here's What We Know
France and Germany want to jointly create an ultra-modern European tank, which will have robotic systems and will be able to launch drones. Drones, in particular, can be used for reconnaissance.
The decision to work on a new European tank was made at a meeting between German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his French counterpart Sebastien Lecornu in Berlin the previous day. The head of the German defence ministry promised that there would be more such meetings in the future.
The tank will be developed within the framework of the existing Main Ground Combat System (MGCS) programme. The project to create a European tank was announced six years ago, but it did not receive much development.
An assessment of the military requirements for tanks should be made by the chiefs of staff of the armies of the two countries by the next meeting. It is scheduled for 22 September and will be held at the Evreux airbase east of Paris.
The new European tank will be a replacement for the Leopard 2 and Leclerc. France and Germany want to develop the next-generation combat vehicle between 2035 and 2040. A sixth-generation European fighter jet, which Germany and France are working on with Spain, is also scheduled to debut at the end of the next decade.
