Romania plans to buy 300 tanks, including American M1 Abrams, to replace the aging TR-85M1s
The Romanian Armed Forces intend to upgrade their fleet of main battle tanks. The country recently initiated the purchase of more than 50 units of M1 Abrams, but in the future Bucharest wants to buy almost six times more combat vehicles.
Here's What We Know
Major General Teodor Incicaș, head of the Directorate General for Armaments, said. The aim is to get rid of the old TR9-85M1 tanks and replace them with more modern equipment.
In mid-May it became known that Romania approved the purchase of 54 tanks Abrams level M1A2. The amount of the deal was more than $1 billion. The terms of the order are not specified, but it is known that the procurement procedure will be launched by the end of this year. We also know that 12 tanks will be transferred from the Pentagon's stockpile.
The aim of the General Directorate of Armaments is to equip the Romanian land forces with the most modern military equipment on the market. That said, the purchase of 54 M1A2 Abrams units does not mean that the rest of the tanks will also be Abrams. It is possible that Romania will pay attention to the Korean K2 Black Panther and German Leopard 2A8.
