Aselsan and Famae will modernise a rare modification of the German Leopard 2A4CHL tank for the Chilean armed forces
German Leopard 2 main battle tanks have entered service in various countries around the world. In particular, Chile. The army of the South American country wants to modernise the combat vehicles.
Here's What We Know
The Chilean version of the tank is called Leopard 2A4CHL. Modernisation of combat vehicles will be handled by the local company Famae and the Turkish defence giant Aselsan, which recently signed a corresponding agreement.
The contract involves technology transfer. This will allow the Chilean company to maintain its armoured vehicle fleet with its own resources in the future. What innovations the modernisation will bring to the tank is not yet specified.
Chile acquired nearly a hundred and fifty Leopard 2A4s in the mid-2000s. The CHL version features new sights and fire control system, while the main point of modernisation is the Rhl 120/L55 cannon, which is now used in the newer version of the Leopard 2A6 tank. The lengthened gun has improved range and armour-piercing performance.
