The US is sending additional aircraft and warships to the Persian Gulf to counter Iran's efforts to intercept commercial ships
Central Command (CENTCOM) has announced the deployment of additional forces to the Middle East. This is a US response to Iran's aggressive actions in the Persian Gulf, which has attacked and attempted to seize more than 20 ships in two years.
Here's What We Know
To counter Iran and ensure freedom of navigation, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered additional forces to be sent to CENTCOM's area of responsibility. We are talking about military aircraft, ships and soldiers.
The additional forces will bring unique capabilities to ensure the protection of the free flow of international trade, support international order and deter Iran. The announcement was made by Michael Kurilla, CENTCOM commander.
The command's statement did not say which aircraft and ships would be sent to the Middle East. Previously, A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft operated in the region. They were later joined by the F-16 Fighting Falcon, and recently it was announced that fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II fighter jets and the USS Thomas Hudner destroyer would be deployed.
