A B-2 Spirit nuclear bomber has arrived at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska
The US Air Force has sent a B-2 Spirit nuclear bomber to the northernmost state. The aircraft arrived in Alaska.
Here's What We Know
The B-2 Spirit strategic bomber landed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson as part of the Agile Combat Employment concept. It aims to dramatically increase the mobility of U.S. Air Force aviation units to remain resilient in conflict.
The Defence Visual Information Distribution Service website has published some spectacular photos of the nuclear bomber, which is assigned to the 509th Bomb Wing. The images show the aircraft landing, driving down the runway and preparing for refuelling.
The B-2 Spirit is one of only two strategic bombers in U.S. service that can use nuclear weapons. The aircraft recently celebrated the 34th anniversary of its first flight, which took place on 17 July 1989.
The U.S. Air Force has 20 bombers, two of which are under repair. The service received a total of 21 aircraft, but one Spirit crashed. That said, the US wanted to order more than 130 bombers, but revised the plans downward after the collapse of the Soviet Union.
