Here's What We Know
The F-35C Lightning II was at the airport for a short time. But it was long enough for Police and Fire Chief Roger Xanders to take some photos of the fifth-generation aircraft.
The fighter jet made a pit stop to refuel. An airport spokesman said a local maintenance company has signed a contract with the U.S. Navy to supply fuel for military aircraft that need to refuel.
The F-35C is one of three versions of the fifth-generation fighter jet. The aircraft first took to the skies in 2006, but due to shortcomings, commissioning did not take place until ten years after the debut flight.
The F-35C version takes off using a catapult and lands on an aircraft carrier deck using an aerofinisher. Due to the increased loads, the aircraft has a reinforced internal structure. Titanium components are used in the tail section and the wing area has been increased by 30 per cent.
