Turkey's fifth-generation KAAN fighter jet will use two US General Electric F110 engines, but replace them with domestic engines from 2028 onwards
A few months ago, Turkey unveiled its own fifth-generation fighter jet. It was named KAAN, and before the announcement was known as TF-X.
Here's What We Know
The new aircraft is being developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI). Temel Kotil, CEO of the Turkish company, said during the IDE 2023 exhibition in Istanbul that the fighter will receive a domestically produced propulsion system in 2028.
The KAAN is designed to replace the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Meanwhile, Turkey intends to upgrade US F-16 Block 30, Block 40 and Block 50 fighters by the end of this decade under the ÖZGÜR-2 programme, which was also announced at IDEF 2023.
The KAAN prototype utilises US General Electric's F110 engines. The fifth-generation fighter will make its maiden flight in 2024, with production scheduled to begin in 2028. The cost of the aircraft may exceed $100 million.
