The ARGE NNbS consortium is developing a short-range SAM system for the German army with IRIS-T missiles and based on the Boxer APC
Germany wants to strengthen its own air defence by ordering the development of a new short-range SAM system.
Here's What We Know
The information was shared by the publication Europäische Sicherheit & Technik. The ARGE NNbS consortium, which was created by Rheinmetall, Diehl and Hensoldt, will develop the SAM. The SAM development order is part of the first phase of the existing LVS NNbS army air defence system modernisation programme, which has been implemented by the German Ministry of Defence since 2017.
The prospective short-range Flugabwehrraketenpanzer (FlaRakPz) surface-to-air missile system will be based on the Boxer armoured personnel carrier. It will be equipped with IRIS-T air-to-ground missiles with a range of up to 12 kilometres and up to 8 kilometres. The unit will also receive a Hensoldt Spexer series radar with target detection and tracking capability. The first SAM test models are to be delivered to the German army in 2026-2027.
