Microsoft has no plans to port Game Pass to PlayStation or Nintendo, says Phil Spencer
Despite rumours that Xbox might be interested in expanding Game Pass offerings to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles, Microsoft's head of gaming Phill Spencer says the company has no plans to do so at this time.
Here's What We Know
He told this in a recent interview with Windows Central:
"I'll start by saying we have no plans to bring Game Pass to PlayStation or Nintendo. It's not in our plans. "
Spenser went on to recall comments made by Tim Stuart, Xbox's CFO, at the recent Wells Fargo TMT Summit about bringing the service to "every screen where games can be played." He clarified that this meant that the company would focus less on hardware and more on software and services:
"The thing I want to be focused on is how do we continue to innovate for people who’ve made the commitment to our hardware platform? And how do we continue to make sure that they feel great about their investment in what we’ve built…I want us to continue to innovate, so people on our console feel like we’re making investments in console that matches their commitment they’re making to us.".
Spencer also expressed his gratitude to Ashley McKissick and her team for the Xbox app, which can now be run in a compact mode, which will be convenient for use on portable gaming devices. He mentioned the ease of use of Lenovo Legion Go while travelling and said that Microsoft sees portable PCs as an extension of the Xbox console, so it is very important to ensure that players can seamlessly transfer their saves and progress between different platforms.
Additionally, Spencer sees the potential for games to be played across devices, including cloud streaming, to provide flexibility and accessibility to the game library.
