Microsoft Defender is now available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android

Today, Microsoft is releasing a new Defender cybersecurity software for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. While the Defender name has been used to market Microsoft's antivirus software for years, this new cross-platform Microsoft Defender app is meant to be more of a simplified dashboard that integrates current antivirus solutions or adds further device security.

The antivirus feature will be available today to Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers on all platforms, but the features may vary. For example, there is no antivirus protection on iOS or iPadOS, and instead, the app offers some web phishing protections alongside a dashboard that contains alerts for other devices.

On Android, Microsoft Defender includes antivirus software and the ability to detect harmful applications. The program will also scan links for potential web phishing protection. On Windows, Microsoft Defender is more like a dashboard than an attempt to supplant the built-in Windows Security program. You can see your current antivirus software from Norton, McAfee, or other providers and manage and view security settings on multiple devices.

Microsoft Defender includes security alerts and suggestions for a wide range of devices, although only Windows and macOS get the tips. For many people, the app may seem unnecessary, but it will be useful for individuals who want to secure family members and multiple devices in one place. Microsoft has stated that additional features are on the way.
