In 2022, Russia will complete testing of upgraded Orion drones with satellite communications and 250 km range, but this is not for sure
Russia's Kronshtadt Group is testing upgraded Orion strike and reconnaissance drones.
What we know
The company's director general said that tests of the combat drones will be completed by the end of 2022. Tests are now "in full swing." The manager stressed that the company has several modifications of Orion, depending on the customer's goals. At the same time "Kronshtadt" can produce several variants of the strike and reconnaissance UAV in parallel.
The upgraded Orion will receive support for satellite communications. The module will be located under the fairing. The integration of satellite communications support should help increase the communication range. The range of application will be 250 km and the flight time will be 24 hours. "Orion" will be able to carry a payload weight 200 kg.
It should be noted that the statements of Russian companies and officials about the completion of UAV tests are not always true. For example, the strike drone Altius, aka Altair, For 11 years Russia has been unable to create the Altius drone, which should surpass the Bayraktar TB2 and MQ-Reaper - but it stole $17 million, but it has not yet seen the light of day. But the general director of the manufacturing company has stolen $17 million.
