Rheinmetall will create charges for 155mm ammunition that can increase the range of M1299 howitzers

The U.S. Army has signed a contract with American Rheinmetall Munitions to supply special charges capable of increasing the range of L/58 artillery units.

Here's What We Know

American Rheinmetall Munitions will introduce a unique powder technology that has no equivalent in the United States. The new charge for 155mm ammunition will allow a range increase of about 10%.

The extended-range projectiles will be suitable for the advanced M1299 next-generation howitzers. The artillery systems are being developed under the Extended Range Cannon Artillery program by BAE Systems. They are expected to be ready as early as 2024.

The M1299 is based on the M109A7 self-propelled artillery unit. It was announced in 2019 at AUSA 2019. $45 million was invested in the creation of the prototype. The first firing tests took place in the spring of 2019, in which the M1299 was able to hit targets at a range of 62 km.
