Microsoft creates mobile game store Xbox to confront Apple and Google
Now various regulators are investigating the acquisition of Activision Blizzard, and in the course of such investigations a lot of interesting information follows. Recently we learned that Microsoft is developing its own game store for mobile devices.
Here's What We Know
Rumors of something like this began to circulate earlier this year. Apparently, the company's plans include creating a mobile Xbox gaming platform and store. That's what the documents talk about."
"Transaction will improve Microsoft's ability to create a next-generation game store that works across devices, including mobile, through the addition of Activision Blizzard content. Building on Activision Blizzard's existing community of gamers, Xbox will try to expand the Xbox Store to mobile devices, attracting gamers to the new Xbox platform. However, alienating consumers from Google Play and the App Store on mobile devices will require a major change in consumer behavior. Microsoft hopes that by offering popular content from well-known developers, gamers will be more inclined to try something new."
Call of Duty: Mobile and Candy Crash Saga are very popular titles published by Activision Blizzard and King, which Microsoft owns. The company could use them to create its own game store to compete with Google Play and the App Store. Given Apple's policies, it's unlikely that Microsoft's store will be a true competitor on the iPad or iPhone anytime soon.
In general, Microsoft will have to try very hard to compete, as it needs to attract different developers who will make games for it, as well as offer favorable terms compared to the App Store and Google Play.
