Ukraine's air defence destroyed 7 of 7 Iskander ballistic missiles that attacked Kyiv

On the first day of summer, Russia continued a series of missile strikes on Ukraine. At around 20:45 (EDT) or 17:45 (PDT), 10 ballistic and cruise missiles were launched at Kyiv.

Here's What We Know

The air defence system was able to destroy all targets. Specifically, seven Iskander-M ballistic missiles and three Iskander-K cruise missiles. All of them were launched from the Bryansk region of the Russian Federation. Unfortunately, there were casualties as a result of the falling debris.

The MIM-104 Patriot surface-to-air missile systems are used to destroy the Iskander-M. Note that ballistic missiles can only be intercepted over a city, as they spend their main route outside the atmosphere, where Patriot cannot reach.

Ballistic intercepts are hit-to-kill. The interceptor hits the ballistic missile by direct impact. But the debris always falls to the ground. To be clear, the 9M723 Iskander-M missile weighs over 3 tonnes, even without taking into account the warhead, which still adds about 500kg.
