Bild will replace some journalists with artificial intelligence

German tabloid Bild, Europe's biggest-selling newspaper, plans to replace a number of editorial positions with artificial intelligence.

Here's What We Know

The newspaper "unfortunately be parting ways with colleagues who have tasks that in the digital world are performed by AI and/or automated processes", newspaper owner Axel Springer SE said in an email to staff.

It said that the roles of some journalists, proofreaders and photo editors "will no longer exist as they do today".

Bild has no specific estimate of the number of jobs that AI will replace.

The newspaper said it would seek to avoid forced redundancies but hoped to reduce the editorial payroll.

The German Journalists' Association (DJV) criticised Springer's plans, warning that job cuts at Bild "slaughter the group’s cash cow". The move was "not just antisocial towards employees, but also extremely stupid economically", it said.
