Amazon has begun using Agility Robotics' Digit humanoid robots in its warehouses
Robots from Agility Robotics have started working in Amazon's warehouses. The devices, which are called Digit, are designed to do routine work.
Here's What We Know
Amazon dismisses accusations that robotic devices can replace humans. The company says Digit will assist staff. In the first phase of the pilot project, the humanoid jobs will take care of recycling containers.
Essentially, Digit's job will be to find and move empty containers. The robot is perfectly suited for such a job. The dimensions and shape of the humanoid are optimised to work in spaces that were designed for humans.
Agility Robotics is receiving funding from Amazon. The company plans to open a new facility where the robots will be manufactured. The factory will appear in Salem, Oregon. Agility's plan is to produce more than 10,000 robotic devices each year.
Digit has been around for several years, but is still an experimental project. It won't stay that way for long. In 2024, Agility Robotics plans to start shipping robots to partners, and in another year, the general public will be able to purchase Digit.
