Vinyl records outsell CDs for the second year in a row

Over the past two years, vinyl records have once again regained their victory over CDs in terms of sales.

Here's What We Know

In 2023, vinyl sales exceeded CD sales for the first time in many years. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, vinyl record sales reached 43 million units and exceeded CD sales by 6 million. This reflects a historic shift in consumer preferences and shows that vinyl remains a popular format for music audio.

However, it's not just sales volumes that show the resurgence of vinyl. Revenues from vinyl sales have far exceeded those of CDs, with $1.4 billion in sales compared to $537 million for CDs. This suggests that while CDs may remain popular with some audiences, vinyl is gaining ground among those who value high sound quality and an authentic listening experience.

This trend reflects a general trend towards renewed interest in physical music media, which for many years was considered obsolete.
