Security concerns: the Dutch government may stop using Facebook
The Dutch government has said it may stop using Facebook after a local regulator warned of privacy issues with Meta.
Here's What We Know
The Dutch Data Protection Authority (DPA) has issued a statement advising the Dutch Ministry of the Interior not to rely on Facebook pages to communicate with citizens. This is because it does not have a clear idea of how Facebook uses the personal data of people who visit government pages.
The government wants to get clarity from Meta "as soon as possible, no later than the summer holidays, on how they are addressing our concerns," said Alexandra van Huffelen, Minister of Digitalisation of the Netherlands, in a statement.
She also added that otherwise, in accordance with the DPA's advice, the government would stop using Facebook.
A Meta spokesperson told CNBC: "We fundamentally disagree with the assessment underlying this advice, which is not in line with the facts and shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how our products work."
