Games will be fewer, but better and on all platforms: Square Enix reveals the basis of its new business strategy for the next three years
Japanese publisher Square Enix has revealed a plan that will help the company improve its performance and become one of the leaders in the gaming industry.
Here's What We Know
The plan for three years was called "Square Enix Reboots and Awakens" (Square Enix Reboots and Awakens) and the main component of the new strategy will be the refusal to release exclusive games. Now all or most Square Enix projects will be released on as many platforms as possible.
Apparently, one of the main factors for the transition to such a business model was the low sales of Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Both games were highly praised by critics and gamers, but due to the fact that they are available (for now) only on PlayStation 5, they showed extremely low sales.
In addition, Square Enix will change its game development priority from quantity to quality, and already released games are "planned to be re-released in new formats." This wording probably refers to ports for different platforms, remakes and remasters.
Unfortunately, due to the revised strategy, some of the projects in development had to be cancelled, and some employees from the European and American divisions will be laid off.
