The DXOMARK service has tested the camera of the new Google Pixel 8a smartphone. It scored 136 points and took 33rd place in the global ranking (and 2nd place in the $400-$600 price segment) between the cameras of the Vivo X80 Pro (Snapdragon) and Vivo X80 Pro (Snapdragon) smartphones. Currently, the rating is headed by the camera of the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra smartphone, which has 169 points.

Comparison with other Google Pixel 8 smartphones

The Google Pixel 8a has demonstrated high results by the standards of its class in the DXOMARK Camera tests, even compared to its predecessor, the Pixel 7a. The use of the Google Tensor G3 chipset, similar to the Pixel 8, did not allow the Pixel 8a to completely fall behind its flagship siblings. Although the photo and zoom results were similar to the Pixel 8, the video quality did not reach the same level. However, the colour reproduction and skin tones in photos were impressive. Although the telephoto lens didn't reach the best standards and the video recording had its drawbacks, Google Pixel 8a researchers concluded that this smartphone remains an attractive choice for those who value high quality in the $400 to $600 smartphone segment.

Test results

Among the advantages of the camera, DXOMARK engineers noted quite good contrast and detail in photos, pleasant colours with neutral white balance in videos. And effective video stabilisation with accurate and stable autofocus. The disadvantages included inaccurate skin tones in indoor portraits, unstable autofocus in a series of shots, and depth artefacts in portrait photos in bokeh mode. We also noticed occasional problems with exposure adaptation, frequent step autofocus, frame shift, and sharpness differences between frames.

About the DXOMARK Camera Photo tests

For scoring and analysis, DXOMARK engineers capture and evaluate more than 2,600 test images in both controlled laboratory conditions and outdoors, indoors and in natural low-light scenes using the camera's default settings. The photographic protocol is designed to address key use cases and is based on typical shooting scenarios such as portraits, family and landscape photography. Evaluation is performed by visually checking images against reference natural scenes and by objective measurements on chart images taken in the laboratory under various lighting conditions from 1 to 1000+ lux and colour temperatures from 2300 K to 6500 K.
