YouTube is testing the ability to fact-check videos with notes
Video hosting service YouTube has begun testing a new feature called "Notes." This feature allows viewers to leave helpful notes on videos that provide relevant and easily understood context. Unlike regular comments, viewers' notes will be placed in a more dedicated section between the video title and the channel name.
Here's What We Know
The goal of the innovation is to provide viewers with additional information to help them better understand content and check facts. This is especially important for educational and news videos where data accuracy is key. The "Notes" feature can also encourage users to engage more with video content.
YouTube is currently inviting a limited number of testers to help create anonymous notes that are not associated with the author's channel. The feature is in the testing phase and YouTube is actively gathering user feedback to develop it further.
Notes can include timestamps and links. They will be expandable with a single tap. In the context of this pilot programme, YouTube is engaging external evaluators to assess the usefulness of the notes.
The notes will start appearing on videos "in the coming weeks and months" for viewers in the US if they are deemed useful.
